Training – Machine Safety – Basics of Machine Safety

Training objective

The aim of the training is to familiarize participants with basic issues related to machine safety, legal regulations and responsibility for the safety status of machines in the plant. As part of the training, each participant will be familiarized with the risk assessment process, verification of the safety status of the machine and measures that can be used to improve safety on the machine.

Target group

Training is dedicated for all people who work with machines in the workplace, both those who work directly with the machines and the engineering and management staff responsible for the machine safety. The training presents in a simple and clear way the basic issues related to machine safety.

Topics covered during the training

  • Introduction to technical safety of machinery
  • Basic terms related to machinery safety
  • Requirements of national regulations (laws and regulations) for machinery used in a plant
  • Responsibility of the machine user
  • Essential requirements
  • Minimum requirements
  • CE marking of machinery
  • Risk assessments
  • Safety distances
  • Safety-related machinery control systems
  • Safety guards and fences
  • Measures to reduce risks occurring on the machine

The training is based on the requirements of the following legal regulations and harmonized standards

  • Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC
  • EN ISO 12100 – Safety of machinery — General principles for design — Risk assessment and risk reduction
  • EN ISO 13857 – Safety of machinery — Safety distances to prevent hazard zones being reached by upper and lower limbs
  • EN ISO 13855 – Safety of machinery — Positioning of safeguards with respect to the approach speeds of parts of the human body
  • EN 60204-1 – Safety of machinery – Electrical equipment of machines – Part 1: General requirements
  • EN ISO 13849-1 – Safety of machinery — Safety-related parts of control systems – Part 1: General principles for design
  • EN ISO 13849-2 – Safety of machinery — Safety-related parts of control systems – Part 2: Validation
  • EN ISO 14119 – Safety of machinery — Interlocking devices associated with guards — Principles for design and selection
  • EN ISO 14120 – Safety of machinery — Guards — General requirements for the design and construction of fixed and movable guards
